Dialogue with Lama Baasansuren Handsuren

Lama Baasansuren Handsuren

accompanied by Vesna Wallace,
Professor of Religious Studies, UCSB

Saturday, January 12th, 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm

This Saturday, the United Lodge of Theosophists Los Angeles will host Lama Baasa in the auditorium of Theosophy Hall. Lama Baasa will give a talk, accompanied by Vesna Wallace, Professor of South Asian Religious Studies at the University of California Santa Barbara.

A Spanish translation of the talk will be provided.

Lama Baasa comes from the Gelugpa tradition and has been head of the Erdene Zuu Monastery, Karakorum, Mongolia, for fourteen years. Erdene Zuu has historically had a Sakya lineage and is thought to be the earliest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia.

Lama Baasa has established many programs for the poor people of his area—workshops of skillful living—and has established a program that allows them to make a living by doing crafts. These include programs for the blind, deaf, and mute, who are often kept hidden by their families in this region of Mongolia.

Read more about Lama Baasa in the New York Times.

Entry to the talk is free of charge. Donations are always welcome

Spiritual Dimensions in Abstract Art

August 11th, 2018, at 2 pm

Beginning in the late 1890’s, a new current of cultural interest in mysticism and spirituality inspired by the international influence of Theosophy, fused with the genesis of abstract painting. Pioneers such as Kandinsky, Kupka, Malevich, and Mondrian radically broke with even the most avant-garde developments of representational art in the attempt to depict deeper levels of reality, essences, and hidden truths. Meanwhile, Hilma af Klint, a relatively unknown Swedish artist and mystic working tirelessly in seclusion, produced over 1200 paintings, drawings, and extensive notebooks. By her own direction, this vast artistic outpouring was hidden away until 20 years after her death. When her works first began to be publicly exhibited in the 1980’s, they disclosed an astonishingly rich and captivating oeuvre that reveals af Klint as one of the remarkable visionaries and forerunners of this path-breaking period.
